How to Attract Bluebirds Bluebirds are a common site in many parks, golf courses and suburban areas. To attract these beautiful birds to your backyard, there are a few simple tricks. One of the easiest ways is by providing nesting sites. Bluebirds are cavity nesters, using old woodpecker nesting sites in hollow trees or holes in or on fence posts. Because they lack the ability to chisel out one of their own, man-made nest boxes can be substituted to compensate for the short supply of these natural cavities. Bluebird houses will generally be about 9 inches tall and 4-5 inches deep, with a smaller entrance hole to keep out marauding birds like starlings. Place your box in an open environment, to allow your bluebirds the most space to soar and search for insects. Food is another easy way to attract bluebirds. If you have the space, try planting berry producing plants, such as holly or bittersweet for a natural source of feed in the winter. Also mealworms are another great option.
